💔 From Broken Promises to Broken Hearts
We come from a rural village where vulnerability is high. Coming from a family with two individuals with disabilities - Mary (mother) and Lydia (daughter) - vulnerability became inevitable. But what we didn't expect was the systematic exploitation that would follow.
🏛️ The Colonial Mindset That Never Left
In our community, minds have been conditioned over generations to look to those with wealth or status as "messiahs." Politicians visit, and we expect handouts. When a "mzungu" (white person) arrives, expectations rise even higher - sweets, donations, biscuits. Perhaps this conditioning dates back to colonial tactics designed to soften resistance.
This interdependence creates perfect conditions for malicious exploitation.
🎭 The Pattern of Deception
📝 The Record Keepers
People arrive at our homesteads, going door to door with notebooks. They're looking for disabled people to record names. The promise? "These records will be presented to white donors for help."
Sometimes they arrive with gifts to earn trust:
- 2kg of corn flour
- 1kg of beans
- Promises of wheelchairs, crutches, walking sticks
We gather at playgrounds or markets. Names are taken. Photos are snapped - especially photos. We return home with hope blooming in our hearts. Surely good Samaritans will help us get the mobility tools we desperately need.
👻 Then They Vanish
The organizations disappear like smoke. We hear rumors that donations were received - but they never reached us, the intended recipients. We're left with more than empty hands; we're left with broken hearts.
It's better for someone to simply gift you something than to create anxiety and make you wait for nothing.
🏃♀️ Who Can Chase Them?
Think about it. Who among us can hold them accountable?
- The blind - Can't see them leave
- The handicapped - Can't run after them
- The deaf - Can't hear the theft happening before their eyes
- The mute - How can you report? To whom? Who will believe you?
The enticement was just to create huge numbers for funding proposals. A few benefit. Many suffer. They vanish. We give up. Life moves on - regardless.
⛪ The "Men of God" Who Heal Everyone But Us
Then there are the television healers. On big screens, we watch in amazement:
- The handicapped walk
- The blind see
- The deaf hear
- The dead rise
We receive invitations. "Come to our revival!" So we attend - crawling, on crutches, with genuine disabilities and genuine hope.
😔 The Bitter Reality
We return home unchanged. Still crawling. Still using our worn crutches. And what do these "men of God" say?
"You have little faith. You cannot be healed."
But why were we invited in the first place? Were we just props for their cameras? Advertisement for their next big donor?
And where is our compensation for appearing on their broadcasts? While we receive one-time meals pushed at us like they're life-changing, these ministers upgrade from expensive cars to private chartered jets.
✨ One Light in the Darkness
We must acknowledge the genuine help we received from Catholic Diocese of Kisii, specifically Nyamagwa Parish.
When I was struggling for school, crawling like a baby despite being a grown woman - scratching my knees and hands just to get to class - a priest came. He saw my struggle.
He helped me get:
- Crutches
- Black orthotic shoes
For the first time, I could stand somewhat upright. I could "walk" like others. Those tools are now worn and torn, held together by multiple repairs, but they changed my life.
That was real help. Direct help. No photos for publicity. Just compassion in action.
📸 The Wheelchair Photo Shoot
Others promise wheelchairs. They call us as a group. We sit on the chairs. They take pictures. We leave - without the wheelchairs.
We didn't have them before. We don't have them after. What can we do?
